For many years, the month of August heralded the big summer book sale hosted by the Library Friends & Foundation. Last fall, we began to fear that August 2019 would be a time of long faces and disappointment for book lovers. With no permanent storage site and no venue available, library book sales might become a thing of the past.
Or so it seemed. Happily, after careful study, the Friends & Foundation determined the very best option was to open a year-round used bookstore, as many other libraries have successfully done. Since its April 9 grand opening, shoppers have rejoiced: Cliffhanger is like having a big summer book sale all year long!
Cliffhanger Used Books is located next to the Post Office at 191 W. Riverside Drive. The store is open every day from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., operated by a team of dedicated volunteers.
The inventory is always changing—thanks to generous donations from the community. If you haven’t stopped by recently, pay us a visit, browse to your heart’s content, and relax in one of our comfy chairs while you preview the choices.
New this summer: shoppers are reveling in our Wednesday Wonders sales. Every Wednesday morning, we announce (in the shop and on Facebook) three categories for that day’s marvelous markdowns: each book in those categories go on sale for $1 each plus tax. As one shopper recently posted, “Yay! You make me look forward to Wednesdays!”
Look for our bargain cart every Thursday at the downtown Farmer’s Markets. And you can be among those previewing the newest selection every Monday from 8 to 10 a.m. at Cliffhanger, simply by purchasing an annual Friends & Foundation membership.
Here are a few fun attributes about Cliffhanger Used Books:
What’s behind the name? “Cliffhanger” was inspired to convey the excitement of a page-turning suspense yarn, with a whimsical nod to our elevated local geography.
Volunteers: they make it possible for Cliffhanger to be open 56 hours a week—including holidays! Volunteers also sort and price the tens of thousands of donations received each year. Stop in and talk to us about joining our great team or click here to learn more.
Fundraising: Cliffhanger is dedicated to providing a fundraising stream to sustain and grow the vital services of our hometown Library. The Library is an essential part of our quality of life, local literacy, and lifelong learning. The Friends & Foundation fund projects like this year’s Summer Reading Program.
A Book-Loving Village: Estes Park is a great place to live or visit if you love books. Our beloved independent bookstore of new books, Macdonald Book Shop, and our public library are both part of that wonderful mosaic.
