Mystery Night: Uncovering Clues to Your Next Great Read
by Cheryl Homan-Wendell, Literary Services Librarian
The Estes Valley loves a mystery.
After all, that’s one of our Library’s most popular genres. We’re spotlighting our Mystery Collections this month. That includes print and audiobooks on the shelves, as well as the Digital Collection. Mysteries comprise 29% of our adult fiction books, with one out of ten checked out at any given moment.
Whether you’re a longtime fan, or someone curious why mysteries have such a loyal readership, you’re invited to join us this Monday, October 22 at 6:30 p.m. It’s part of our monthly programs showcasing literary gems, making it easier for you to discover books you’ll enjoy. Click here to register.
Our featured book spotlights one of the American West’s most popular authors—and his most popular character. Craig Johnson’s latest is Depth of Winter, bringing Wyoming Sheriff Walt Longmire into his 14th novel. Fans can rejoice, while newcomers to this genre are in for an equal treat.
Join us at Monday’s program and we’ll have some fun. We’ll take roles in a Mini-Murder-Mystery party, with a Western theme. Wear your favorite Western duds, or choose your look from our props on hand. All in good spirit as we enjoy refreshments and share reading ideas with one another—and, thanks to our green-screen booth, you’ll get a keepsake photo to take home too.
Craig Johnson’s new book finds Sheriff Longmire south of the border in Mexico, trying to rescue his daughter Cady from the clutches a murderous drug kingpin. On his own and without the help of his deputy Vic Moretti and lifelong friend Henry Standing Bear, Longmire finds himself joining forces with a ragtag posse that rattles around northern Mexico in a highly conspicuous 1959 pink Cadillac. While they last, copies of Depth of Winter are available for attendees to take home.
To catch up on all the other titles in the Longmire series, you have many options. You’ll find Craig Johnson’s popular mysteries in the print collection—both regular-size print and large-type editions, as well in audiobook formats. You’ll also find the Longmire books in the digital Cloud Library for easy access on your tablet, Smartphone or eReader.
If you missed the popular Longmire television series, you’ll find all five seasons in the DVD collection. Depth of Winter will be available soon in our (twelve-pack) Book Club Bag format.
That offers a sense of just how many options there are. The Library strives to provide as many convenient formats as possible, making it easy whether you’re reading, listening, or viewing.
Craig Johnson is among this month’s Top Five most popular mystery authors, joined by Dana Stabenow, Margaret Mizushima, C.J. Box, and Lee Child.
Author Rick Riordan said it well: “A good book always keeps you asking questions, and makes you keep turning pages so you find out the answers.” Your Library staff is here to help you find a wellspring of great page-turners.
