Closing & Emergency Decisions

The Estes Valley Library (Library) is a service organization and its goal is to maintain normal operating hours even in adverse conditions or when building functions are impaired. Under these conditions, every reasonable effort will be made to maintain regular Library operating hours. However, there will be times when the library must close. The primary factors of any decision made to close the Library will be the safety of the staff and library patrons, and protection of library assets.

The Director is authorized to close the Library in cases of emergencies and extreme weather. The decisions any Library employee makes while acting in good faith according to Library policies and procedures in an emergency, will be supported by their supervisor and Library administration.

The Library may close or postpone opening when weather conditions exist making it highly improbable or dangerous for travel. In cases of impaired building function (e.g. power outage) postponement or closing is at the discretion of the Director. The Board President will be called and advised of the situation.

Public announcements of unscheduled closures will be made on the Library website, social media, and by any other sources deemed useful by the Director. A note will be posted, when possible, on the front door describing the situation and stating when the Library is expected to reopen.

Public Safety Emergencies

It is the policy of the Library to provide a safe environment for staff and patrons. When a pandemic, fire, threat or other emergency has been declared, the Director is authorized to take reasonable steps to maximize protection and reduce risk. The Director, in consultation with appropriate public safety authorities, will establish library procedures to be followed to mitigate health hazards and other conditions that may directly affect public safety.
